Steve's Steamboat
A Printed S-Blend Articulation Speech Therapy Storybook | Pretzel Learning, LLC
Set sail with Steve the Stork in this exciting, hand-illustrated speech therapy storybook designed to support articulation, language development, phonological awareness, problem solving, and meaningful communication!
Steve loves steamboats! When he discovers an opportunity to enter a model boat race, he can't wait to compete.
Determined to prepare the perfect racing boat, Steve carefully sands, decorates, and packs his model steamboat. He arrives at the starting line ready to race against Peggy the Pelican and Mel the Heron.
But the competition doesn't go quite as planned!
As the boats race down the stream, Peggy's sailboat encounters trouble. Then, just as Steve and Mel approach the finish line, dark storm clouds roll in.
With the boats sinking and the weather becoming dangerous, the birds must abandon the competition and find shelter.
Will Steve get another chance to race his beloved steamboat?
Through Steve's unexpected adventure, students explore perseverance, sportsmanship, managing disappointment, and adapting to changes in plans.
Purposefully Designed for Speech Therapy
Unlike traditional children's books that are later adapted for therapeutic use, Steve's Steamboat was developed specifically for speech-language therapy from the very beginning. Its narrative, vocabulary, illustrations, and speech sound targets were intentionally selected to support meaningful communication practice.
Designed for SLPs and SLPAs working with individual students or mixed-goal therapy groups, the storybook provides opportunities to address articulation, language, problem solving, and social communication objectives through a single narrative.
A distinguishing feature of this book is its intentional concentration of /s/-blends, particularly /st/, providing repeated opportunities to practice consonant clusters in meaningful, connected speech.
Targeted Articulation Through Connected Speech
The 23-page illustrated narrative emphasizes /s/-blends, providing opportunities to address consonant cluster production, cluster reduction, and speech sound generalization.
Primary Articulation Targets:
/st/ – Steve, stork, steamboat, starting, storm
/sp/ – spoonbill, sport, speed
/sk/ – sky
Additional opportunities include final /s/-clusters, three-consonant /s/-clusters, /l/-blends, and more complex consonant sequences.
The included articulation tracker identifies the following target occurrences throughout the narrative:
/st/: 61 occurrences
/sp/: 7 occurrences
/sk/: 4 occurrences
/sn/ and /sm/: 1 combined occurrence
Final /s/-blends: 29 occurrences
/l/-blends: 11 occurrences
These documented speech sound opportunities help clinicians locate targets and collect articulation data while maintaining the natural flow of the story.
A Connected Four-Book S-Blend Series
Steve's Steamboat is part of Pretzel Learning's intentionally coordinated four-book /s/-blend storybook series:
Steve's Steamboat
Stacey and Her Scarf
Snort the Snail Sees Sparklers
Mister Moseeto Takes a Nap
Developed with consonant cluster reduction in mind, the storybooks contain carefully selected vocabulary that connects through minimal-pair relationships across the series.
For example, spoke appears in Snort the Snail Sees Sparklers, while soak appears in Mister Moseeto Takes a Nap. Removing /p/ from spoke changes the word to soak, demonstrating how omitting a consonant can change a word's meaning.
These connections complement Pretzel Learning's Minimal Pair Card Game, providing additional opportunities for auditory discrimination, phonological awareness, and interactive word comparisons.
Each storybook can be used independently or alongside the other three titles, allowing clinicians to reinforce articulation targets across multiple familiar narratives.
Building Language Skills Through Competition, Weather, and Problem Solving
Beyond articulation, Steve's Steamboat introduces language concepts through a story involving preparation, competition, and unexpected challenges.
As Steve prepares his model steamboat, students can practice sequencing, describing actions, identifying object functions, and discussing planning.
The race also introduces opportunities to compare different types of boats. Steve's model steamboat uses a small steam engine, while Peggy's sailboat depends on its sail.
Students can describe how the boats differ, predict how each might perform, and explain what happens when Peggy's boat begins taking on water.
When storm clouds appear, clinicians can encourage students to identify environmental clues, predict changes in weather, and discuss appropriate safety decisions.
These experiences support descriptive vocabulary, comparing and contrasting, cause-and-effect reasoning, inferencing, and problem solving.
Supporting Emotional Regulation, Sportsmanship, and Flexible Thinking
Throughout the story, Steve experiences the excitement of preparing for a competition and the disappointment of having his plans interrupted.
Although Steve hopes to win, his competitors encounter difficulties, and the approaching storm ultimately prevents anyone from finishing the race.
Peggy must also cope with disappointment after her sailboat sinks. Later, she recognizes that repairing her boat may allow her to compete again.
These events provide opportunities to explore sportsmanship, emotional regulation, perseverance, and responding to setbacks.
The story concludes with the birds gathering under the dock to shelter from the storm. Despite the canceled race, they share a meal and enjoy time together.
This ending encourages discussion of friendship, cooperation, gratitude, and discovering positive experiences even when plans change.
