Meet Pretzel Bean
A Printed /p/ and /b/ Articulation Speech Therapy Storybook | Pretzel Learning, LLC
Meet Pretzel Bean, a curious little black-eyed pea with a big imagination, in this charming, hand-illustrated speech therapy storybook designed to support articulation, language development, phonological awareness, and meaningful communication!
Behind the big red barn on Gardener Family Farm, Pretzel Bean lives with his siblings inside a growing bean pod.
But something unusual is happening!
While the neighboring bean pods grow long and straight, Pretzel's home begins to bend and twist. Why does his family's pod look so different?
With help from his siblings and a wise amaranth plant named Grammar anth, Pretzel discovers that his family's unusual home is part of what makes them special.
As the garden grows and changes, Pretzel explores his surroundings, asks questions, and discovers the importance of curiosity, family, patience, and appreciating differences.
Meet Pretzel Bean also introduces the character behind Pretzel Learning's name, making this story a special starting point for exploring our growing library of speech and language resources.
Purposefully Designed for Speech Therapy
Unlike traditional children's books that are later adapted for therapeutic use, Meet Pretzel Bean was developed specifically for speech-language therapy from the very beginning. Its narrative, vocabulary, illustrations, and speech sound targets were intentionally selected to support meaningful communication practice.
Designed for SLPs and SLPAs working with individual students or mixed-goal therapy groups, the storybook provides opportunities to address articulation, language, vocabulary development, and social communication objectives through a single narrative.
A distinguishing feature of this book is its integration of speech sound practice with nature-based vocabulary and concepts, encouraging students to explore how plants grow, compare physical characteristics, and communicate their observations.
Targeted Articulation Through Connected Speech
The 24-page illustrated narrative emphasizes /p/ and /b/, two bilabial stop consonants that share the same place and manner of articulation but differ in voicing.
Primary Articulation Targets:
/p/ – Pretzel, pod, pea, peek, pumpkin
/b/ – bean, big, barn, bend, bumpy
Additional Articulation Targets:
/m/ – morning, more, blooming
/d/ – deep, garden, dried
/t/ – tiny, time, potato
/s/ and /z/ – sun, sister, peas, buzz
The narrative provides repeated opportunities to practice these sounds across different word positions within meaningful, connected speech.
Because /p/ and /b/ differ in voicing, clinicians can also use the story to support auditory discrimination and comparisons between voiced and voiceless consonants.
The variety of speech sound targets makes Meet Pretzel Bean particularly useful for mixed-goal therapy groups, allowing students with different articulation objectives to participate in the same story.
Building Language Skills Through Nature, Curiosity, and Discovery
Beyond articulation, Meet Pretzel Bean develops language concepts through observation, plant growth, and exploration.
As Pretzel notices his family's bean pod bending while others remain straight, he begins asking questions about the differences he sees.
His conversations with his siblings and Grammar anth provide opportunities to explore descriptive vocabulary, comparing and contrasting, asking questions, and making predictions.
The garden introduces plants and vegetables such as peas, beets, spinach, pumpkins, bell peppers, potatoes, and amaranth.
These familiar and less familiar examples support semantic categorization, vocabulary enrichment, and discussions of plant characteristics.
Students can also explore how plants change over time, describe differences in shapes and sizes, and identify cause-and-effect relationships within the garden.
The story's natural progression provides opportunities for sequencing, story retelling, WH questions, and explaining observations.
Supporting Family Relationships, Belonging, and Self-Acceptance
One of the central themes of Meet Pretzel Bean is recognizing that differences are a natural and valuable part of the world.
When Pretzel and his siblings notice their unusually curved pod, they wonder why their home looks different from those around them.
With guidance from Grammar anth, they begin to understand that their pod's shape is a distinctive characteristic of their bean family.
These experiences create opportunities to discuss self-acceptance, belonging, empathy, and positive family relationships.
Pretzel's curiosity also demonstrates how asking questions and seeking explanations can lead to greater understanding.
Through the story, students can explore how people, families, and living things may share similarities while also having meaningful differences.

These companion resources build directly upon the book's characters, vocabulary, narrative events, and targeted speech sounds, allowing clinicians to reinforce familiar concepts across multiple therapy sessions.
Companion activities may include articulation practice, phoneme tracking, auditory discrimination, vocabulary development, categorization, and narrative-based language exercises.
Coordinated companion activities are available separately as digital downloads on the Pretzel Learning website. These supplemental resources are not included with the purchase of the printed storybook.
