A Contextual Facilitation Approach to /f/ and /v/ Articulation

Developed specifically for speech-language therapy, the 28-page narrative emphasizes /f/ and /v/, two labiodental fricatives that differ in voicing.

A distinguishing feature of this storybook is that both voiced /ð/ and voiceless /θ/ TH sounds were deliberately excluded from the entire narrative.

Some students substitute TH sounds for /f/ or /v/. By excluding these potentially competing dental fricatives, the story provides a more controlled phonetic environment for students who may benefit from reduced sound competition.

This intentional application of contextual facilitation allows clinicians to emphasize /f/ and /v/ production before introducing potentially challenging phonemic contrasts through separate activities, when appropriate.

Primary Articulation Targets:

  • /f/ – Fern, fair, family, fun, five

  • /v/ – Valley, very, save, evening

Additional Articulation Targets:

  • Vocalic /r/ – Fern, first, Ferris

  • /l/ – look, lights, Valley

  • /s/ – save, seven, tickets

  • /z/ – was, rides

The included Articulation Data Tracker identifies the following target occurrences:

  • /f/: 144 occurrences

  • /v/: 53 occurrences

  • Vocalic /r/: 127 occurrences

  • /l/: 69 occurrences

  • /s/: 110 occurrences

  • /z/: 25 occurrences

The tracker uses color-coded shapes alongside the narrative text, allowing clinicians to mark productions, record substitutions, and monitor student progress.

Speech and Language Goals Supported

  • Primary Articulation: /f/ and /v/ in connected speech

  • Contextual Facilitation: Deliberate exclusion of /θ/ and /ð/

  • Additional Articulation: Vocalic /r/, /l/, /s/, and /z/

  • Phonological Awareness: Voicing contrasts, sound identification, and auditory discrimination

  • Expressive and Receptive Language: Vocabulary development, comprehension, and descriptions

  • Narrative Skills: Sequencing, retelling, WH questions, and story comprehension

  • Executive Functioning: Planning, goal setting, decision-making, and resource management

  • Early Mathematics: Counting tickets, simple subtraction, and comparing quantities

  • Higher-Level Language: Predictions, cause-and-effect reasoning, and problem solving

  • Emotional Development: Managing disappointment, flexible thinking, and learning from consequences
